About

diedrich designcritic is a Berlin-based consultancy specialising in physical design disciplines. It is run by Prof. Dr. Lisa Babette Diedrich. Her main areas of expertise are landscape architecture, urbanism, and design research. She offers a wide range of services, including research and project development, expert consulting, strategic design, journalistic and academic writing, lecturing, and critique.

Since April 2025, Lisa has been a professor of landscape architecture at the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), where she is head of the ÉLAN Chair: Designing Landscapes of the Anthropocene. Lisa aims to promote transdisciplinary research by encouraging critical thinking about professional practice, and she aspires to empower landscape architects and urban designers to become agents of change for a sustainable future on the urbanising planet. Her research and teaching focus on developing a new understanding of design and on the site-specific transformation of urban areas. They also concentrate on working with fragilities in vulnerable water landscapes and on critical urbanities within fragmented metropolitan regions across cultures and continents.

Early in her career, she studied architecture and urbanism in Paris, Marseille and Stuttgart; journalism in Berlin; and later landscape architecture at the University of Copenhagen, where she received her PhD. From 1993 to 2000 she was a professional editor of Topos European Landscape Magazine. From 2000 to 2006 she worked as a personal consultant to Munich’s chief architect at the city’s public construction department. In 2007 she moved into academia, teaching and researching in the field of contemporary landscape architecture and urbanism at universities in Europe, North Africa, Australia and Latin America. From 2012 to 2023, she was a professor of landscape architecture at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Malmö in Sweden. From 2023 to 2025, she held the Walter Gropius Chair (DAAD) at the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism at the University of Buenos Aires (FADU-UBA) in Argentina.

In 2023, she received the LILA Honour Award from the Landezine International Landscape Architecture Platform. Most recently, in 2024, she won the Best International Exhibition Award at the Architecture Biennial Buenos Aires with a German-Argentinian team for the ‘AGGLO Maker Space Berlin-Buenos Aires’ installation.

Lisa is fluent in several languages, including English, Spanish, French, German and Italian, and has a basic understanding of Swedish, Danish, Dutch and Arabic. She collaborates with colleagues from many different continents and cultures. She has published numerous books, book chapters, journal editions and articles, and lectured to professional and academic audiences. Lisa serves on the editorial boards of the open access journal SPOOL for the built environment, and the open access journal PortusPlus, as well as the Italian professional magazine Architettura del Paesaggio. Since 2006 she has worked as editor-in-chief of the Landscape Architecture Europe book series and the international magazine for landscape architecture and urbanism, ’scape.
